Chapter 1

A new story built around your child

Tell us their name, their age and what they love. We write a picture book for them, and no two stories come out the same.

  • Three age groups: Toddler (2-4), Early Reader (5-7), Middle Grade (8+)
  • Short, medium or long, to fit a car journey or a bedtime
  • Five moods from happy and silly to calm and dreamy, or Surprise Me
  • Written in British, American or Australian English

Chapter 2

Narration that follows the words

Any page can be read aloud in a warm, clear voice. The sentence being read lights up, so your child can follow along while they listen.

  • Each sentence lights up as it's read
  • The story's choice is read aloud too
  • Good for the car, where nobody can hold the book

Chapter 3

Stories they can sound out

Learn-to-read mode writes with words your child can decode at their phonics phase and marks the sounds on the page. It follows UK Letters and Sounds, US Common Core and the Australian Curriculum, phases 2 to 5.

  • Aims for at least 90% decodable words in every story
  • Sounds and tricky words are marked on the page
  • Their own characters can star in a phonics story too

Chapter 4

They choose what happens next

Partway through, the story stops and asks your child to decide. Each answer leads to different pages, so one story can be read two ways.

  • One big decision, two different endings
  • Tap to choose, no reading needed
  • Read it again and take the other path

Each choice opens a different next page. Read again and take the other path.

Chapter 5

Characters from your own photos

Upload a photo of your child, a pet or a favourite toy and we turn it into a character. We draw each character from a few angles first, so they look the same on every page.

  • People, animals, robots, fantasy creatures and more
  • The same look on every page, even in group scenes
  • Describe a character in words if you'd rather not use a photo

Chapter 6

Nine ways to draw it

Pick how the pictures look, from a classic storybook to cut-paper collage. Every page of the story is drawn in the style you choose.

  • Each age group sees the styles that suit it
  • One style runs through the whole book

Questions parents ask

How does My Story Wish make a personalised story?
You fill in a short recipe: your child's name and age, a mood, a length, an illustration style and who's in it. We write a new story from those details and illustrate every page. It takes a few minutes.
What ages are the stories for?
Roughly 2 to 12, in three groups: Toddler (2-4), Early Reader (5-7) and Middle Grade (8+). The group sets the vocabulary, sentence length and styles on offer.
Can I put my child in the story from a photo?
Yes. Upload one clear photo of your child, a pet or a toy and we turn it into a character who looks the same on every page. You can describe a character in words instead.
Are the stories safe for children?
Every story is written for your child's age group and checked against our content policy before it reaches you. There are no ads.
What is a learn-to-read story?
A story written with words your child can sound out at their phonics phase, with the sounds they're learning marked on the page. It covers phases 2 to 5.
Can my child choose what happens?
On plans that include interactive stories, yes. Partway through, they pick one of two paths, and each path has its own pictures and ending.
