Phonics mode follows UK Letters and Sounds, US Common Core or the Australian Curriculum, and you choose the phase for each story in the wizard. - The first nineteen letters and their sounds, blended into simple words like sat, pin and mum. Children learn to sound out each letter and push the sounds together. Phase 2 stories aim for nearly every word to be one your child can decode with those letters.
- My child knows the sounds but cannot blend them. What helps?
- Blending is a separate skill from knowing letter sounds, and it often clicks suddenly rather than gradually. Short, repetitive stories help because the same words come up often enough to become familiar. Say the sounds quickly and close together when you model it.
- Which words will my child meet?
- Words at this phase include sat, pin, mum, dog, cat, top. Phonics mode aims for nine in ten words in a story to be decodable at the phase you choose. That is a target, so expect the odd exception. The phase's graphemes and tricky words are highlighted on the page to help your child spot them.
- How does the story get personalised?
