- What are consonant clusters?
- Two or more consonants side by side where each keeps its own sound, as in stop, milk or frog. Unlike digraphs, nothing merges, so the challenge is holding several sounds in order while blending. That is why Phase 4 often feels like a step up.
- Phase 4 introduces no new letter sounds. What is my child learning?
- Fluency, mostly. Phase 4 revisits everything from Phases 2 and 3 in harder word shapes rather than adding sounds. The work is handling clusters at both ends of a word, like stamp or drink, quickly enough to keep hold of the meaning.
- Which words will my child meet?
- Words at this phase include stop, milk, frog, hand, best, drink. Phonics mode aims for nine in ten words in a story to be decodable at the phase you choose. That is a target, so expect the odd exception. The phase's graphemes and tricky words are highlighted on the page to help your child spot them.
- How does the story get personalised?
