Phonics mode follows UK Letters and Sounds, US Common Core or the Australian Curriculum, and you choose the phase for each story in the wizard. Questions parents ask
- Why does Phase 5 feel harder than the earlier phases?
- Because it breaks the rule children have relied on. Until now one sound had one spelling. Phase 5 teaches that the same sound can be written several ways, as in phone, sauce and night, and that the same letters can sound different. That ambiguity takes time.
- What is a split digraph?
- Two letters working together with a consonant between them, as in cake or time, where the final e changes the vowel sound. Children often meet these as the magic e rule. Phase 5 stories use them in ordinary sentences, so your child meets the pattern in context.
- Which words will my child meet?
- Words at this phase include phone, sauce, night, people, were, money. Phonics mode aims for nine in ten words in a story to be decodable at the phase you choose. That is a target, so expect the odd exception. The phase's graphemes and tricky words are highlighted on the page to help your child spot them.
- How does the story get personalised?
- You enter your child's name, age group and a few interests, then pick a mood, a length and an illustration style. The story is written around those choices. You can also add custom characters from a photo or a written description, so a sibling, friend or pet can join in.
